Not a greenhouse! The SolarGardenDome is simply a large, walk-in cold frame! Click on picture to enlarge it. How does it work? The sun, shining through the clear cover, heats up the soil inside the dome. Because there is no wind inside, the stored heat in the soil is given off slowly at night. The night time heat that radiates from the soil is held in by the cover. Test have shown that a twelve degree gain in soil temperature was averaged during the month of April in Wisconsin. The gain between inside and out was a steady one, not the erratic up and down of early spring outdoor soil temperatures. It does nothing more than cover an ordinary garden for the purpose of dramatically extending the growing season. Nothing ordinary about the material, though! Its a tough 12 mil poly vinyl chloride (PVC) material that is form fitted by a process of electronic heat sealing. It does not break down like polyethylene materials and will last for many years. The drawings within the details link depict the the dome installed on a standard lumber base which can be built at home with plans included with a dome purchase. The base is anchored to the ground with a simple and effective system included with every SolarGardenDome. Each dome has one doorway that is operated with heavy, weather resistant zippers. All windows have factory secured fiberglass screen cloth as standard equipment to keep out the insects, with window panels operated with the same zippers as the door. A few basic tools are necessary to assemble the wooden base but no tools are required to install the aluminum framework or PVC covering. That's one of the great points to a SolarGardenDome - easy on and off with no tools!
